Who's Your Mommy?

I came across an interesting article today about a married couple who were unable to conceive a child. They used both an egg and sperm donor and also a surrogate mother. The strange thing was, she did all of this online. She picked the egg and sperm donors off one website, and the surrogate mother from another. Last July, the twins were born, but they only stayed with the couple who "purchased" them for one month. The police showed up at their Michigan home and took the babies away from them and returned them to the surrogate mother, the one who cared for them for the whole nine months. Turns out, the surrogate mother found out that the adoptive mother had a mental illness and she got a court order to retrieve the babies. The surrogate mom did not want anything bad to happen to the children over the years, so now she is their gaurdian. What about the adoptive mother and father, will they get their money back? I don't think that this is fair, I believe that having a mental illness is not enough to take children away from their mother. Her husband could take care of them if she ever had a relapse. What do you think?

  1. I saw this article too!! I actually got kind of confused while reading it, because at first I thought the article was going to be about the first family and their "made/purchased" children. Then, the article suddenly switches gears and says that the surrogate mother got the children back. Personally, I think that it depends on what type of mental illness the mother has. In some cases, I think it is necessary to take children away from a mother if she is unstable and unfit to take care of the kids. But it depends on what the situation is in the family, and to what extent the mental illness affects the mom.

  2. I think a lot of it has to do with the legal stuff, which is probably really confusing. So it's a question of say does the surrogate mother have final say, I guess you could put it. But that's hard to say cause if you pay for something isn't it yours? I know it sounds bad, but I wonder if the surrogate mother has the right to do that?

And I agree with Katie cause if the mother's illness is severe you could wonder if she's a fit parent. Honestly though the surrogate mother should have taken a little more time to get to know who was going to be taking her children so she didn't have this problem in the first place. Maybe this important of a decision shouldn't just be done online.

  3. This story seemed really similar to the film, I Am Sam. The film portrayed a mentally unstable man who was still capable of love and care for his daughter. After watching this film, I agree with you, mental illnesses can be overcome. But I also wonder about the severity of the illness and the commitment of the father as well. The mentally ill aren't as restricted as we think.
