Help or Hurt?

Last Friday, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Usually this award is given to individuals who have accomplished something extraordinary. Though I understand that he was given this award based on  "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" (Nobelprize.org), I can't help but wonder what he actually has accomplished. Searching the web, I found many articles saying the same thing. They all pretty much ask if this is a good or bad thing. What do you think about Obama winning the prize? Is it too soon in his presidency or will he be even more respected as a president now? President Obama said he was very surprised and humbled by his Nobel Peace Prize. I think Americans can all agree that we now expect Obama to achieve something great!

  1. I think that it is a little soon for Obama to be receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He has accomplished something extraordinary for himself as well as the country in becoming the first African-American president. However, he was not given the Nobel Peace Prize for this. I don't doubt that his intentions will later allow him to achieve great things, but I don't think he has been in office long enough to deserve this award. In your post, you said he was rewarded for his "efforts." But I think there is a distinction to be made between his efforts and his accomplishments. He has begun to take baby steps that will benefit the bigger picture as time goes on, but I think he was rewarded too early for his intentions rather than his actions.

  2. I think it's a little silly that Obama has been given the peace prize. Although he has set great goals, he hasn't accompished anything to deserve the prize. It seems the everyone has been Obama obsessive, and this is just another stunt to show our pride in our President. We all expect Obama to achieve something great, but there is no guarantee that he will be able to fulfill these expectations.

  3. I agree with Sophie and Madeline because I think that it is too early in his term to say whether he deserves the prize. He has come up with many great plans, but they haven't yet so how do we know if he will actually go through with them... actions are very different than intentions. I feel like this award had raised everyone's expectations of what President Obama will accomplish in the future and if things don't go as planned people will be even more disappointed.
